Should I Get a HEPA Filter For My HVAC?

Indoor air quality is a big deal, especially if you or a loved one suffer from a respiratory disorder. Asthma, COPD, and other respiratory conditions can be triggered by everything from dust mites to pet dander. Even small amounts of mold hidden in your home’s basement or crawlspace can be enough to make your family sick.

A HEPA Filter May Be the Answer

For people who are facing indoor air quality issues, a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter may be the solution. A HEPA filter uses layers of filter material to reduce and remove tiny particulates in the air you breathe. While standalone air purification units often utilize HEPA filter technology to clean the air in a single room, you may be able to use a HEPA filter for your whole house by installing one in your HVAC system.

What Particulates Does a HEPA Filter Remove?

HEPA filters come in a variety of filter strengths. The strength of a HEPA filter is measured in minimum efficiency reporting values (MERVs). A HEPA filter with a higher MERV rating will be able to filter out smaller particulates in the air. The strongest MERV rating can filter out particulates down to 0.3 microns.

When you install a HEPA filter in your HVAC system, the air that is pulled through your intake gets filtered. You may also have filters that are attached to other parts of the air handling components. Not all HVAC systems are designed to push and pull air through strong filters, so it would be a good idea to work with an HVAC expert before trying to install filters yourself.

The Cost of Installing HVAC HEPA Filters

When it comes to the cost of installing HEPA filters in your HVAC system, you may only be looking at the cost of the filters themselves. Many times, the normal filters used for your system’s air intake can be swapped out for HEPA filters to get better indoor air quality. In other cases, you may need to have a new system installed to take advantage of HEPA filtration.

If you do need a new system, you might consider HVAC financing instead of trying to pay for everything upfront. New HVAC systems are an investment, and HVAC financing can take a lot of the initial burden off your shoulders when it comes time to pay.
